Do I really need an amp or effects pedal as a complete beginner?

check jb music, their audio technicas and sennheisers are on sale for around 35% off iirc look for the ath-m40x (around 5.7k w/ the ongoing sale) or maybe the m20x/m30x for a more budget friendly option however you do lose a bit of low end and air frequencies
