I nearly cried yesterday i finally “get” what yall talking about
It depends on what you buy and what you like. And they only hiss if your source is noisy. And you have less analytical nearfield speakers too. For the price, I find the Audioengine A5+ to be good. And nobody would spit on a pair of KEF LSXII.

Active Speakers for my Audio-Technica AT-LPW50PB turntable
For this price range check out the Klipsch the Fives $499 on Amazon maybe cheaper this prime day. The other one is the Audioengine A5+ for $399 on crutchfield.

I was disappointed with the Acoustic Energy AE1 active and I have more respect for the Audioengine A5+.
I've had Audioengine A5+, HD3s, and HD6s. I enjoyed them all, but I just swapped out the HD6s for ELAC B63s + WiiM Ultra Amp, and there is no comparison. I had got the HD6s for $500 on sale, and they're worth that, but not their normal price of $700 when you can get a much better setup for another $

How much does subwoofer make up for average speakers
Audioengine A5+ speakers go down to 50hz by themselves, I have noticed they sound good the few times I had my sub woofer unconnected to them. Don't know what your level of cheap is but you might get the pair for somewhere in £350 range.

Something like a pair of Audioengine A5+ for under $400 and a WiiM Plus Pro RCA into them, would be just the speakers and the small WiiM and come in around $600. Less, if on sale. Then get Qobuz or Tidal. Later, add a subwoofer, etc. as and if needed.

If high fidelity and clear detail are the priority (or in other words, accurate/flat frequency response and low distortion output) then I highly recommend the Kali Audio LP-6 v2 active studio monitors. For a more living room friendly alternative in size and looks, I can also recommend the Kanto REN.

Hello, novice audiophile here looking for recommendations for DAC/AMP Combos for my desktop setup. I am currently using my motherboards on-board soundcard to output into a pair of AudioEngine A5+'s (I know, but they were cheap and work for my setup) and an AudioEngine floor sub. I have my room/setup
