Looks like Software Optimization is back on the menu boys!

I personally question how much software optimisation can be done to be honest. One of the biggest resource hogs on my machine right now is hilariously Spotify, at a whopping 1.8G of RAM split over 9 processes. Then I've got Discord with 8 processes at 1.7GB. That's 3.5G, or nearly half the RAM gone

Dell XPS for ubuntu

I have an XPS13 9315 and despite it being 'linux certified' I still have no working webcam, 3 years after purchasing it. Needless to say I won't be buying Dell anymore for linux. FYI, I'm using linux since 1999 so it's not a user problem. It's a propriety driver from Intel thingy which I would not e

ASUS Gaming Laptops Have Been Broken Since 2021: A Deep Dive

My Dell xps13 2-in-1 7390 (also 2019) was absolute garbage. I wouldn't be surprised if they did some equally inept things. They didn't include a hibernate mode. Only sleep, with Wi-Fi enabled. If I tried to put my ultra portable laptop in a backpack without shutting down entirely, it would try to li

Shoddy little brainfuck compiler in C

Wow I didn't expect such a comprehensive reply. Really interesting, actually. Now you've typed it up you might as well post it on your blog. :D Thanks to w64dk the past few years I've done a whole lot of development on this system anyway. For developing my own software, my way, it's overall a better

Dell & Lenovo now sponsoring the Linux Vendor Firmware Service

Hooray for their marketing department. /s But we really need implementation. For example, I have Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS installed to my Dell Inc. XPS 13 9310, but LVFS can't retrieve the latest unless Dell publishes it to LVFS. Current LVFS entries: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devices/com.dell.ueficfb08d7c.f

Ubuntu is not ready for mainstream

few rough edges Thanks for the earnestness here, I find it missing from most responses which have been on the pedantic side (and missing the bigger picture observation). if you have a well supported machine.. you will have a very smooth experience My Dell XPS 13 is very well supported, in fact Dell

Premium vs. XPS

Thank is great to hear, thank you! I think I am going to pick one up today. I tried the ARM based system on an XPS 13 and absolutely hate it, the setup was malfunctioning, it glitches, feels like a laptop from 20 years ago. This seems like a great solution to that!

Seeking Distro Recommendation: Windows User switching with Dell XPS 13 9310

There was a project called Howdy that replicated Windows Hello. But that project is no longer maintained. The last commit was back in 2020. https://github.com/boltgolt/howdy Other than Howdy, no, there is no alternative. If you really want to use the fingerprint reader, this is a link to the Arch wi

How are you guys running / buying any laptop >7 years old?

I daily drive a maxed Dell Latitude E Series from 2011, Win7, Office 2010, i7, 16GB. It still does me just fine although few parts are original. I have a box of spares/repairs - spare units on eBay below $150 - great value. Because I’m also a developer I had to get an XPS13 9370 (2018) for W11. Here
