Is a decent machine worth it if you don't buy expensive beans?
I can buy specialty beans almost for the price of supermarket organic blabla beans. So I guess you have to find a better supplier. Also your grinder does the most important part. So I would go (went) for a Rancilio Silvia and then the most expensive grinder your budget allows. Eureka Mignon Libra to

Married with a Machine? [€1000]
I went with a Profitec Go and Eureka Mignon grinder and feel like I made a great entry without needing to upgrade any time soon. For me, PID was a must to reduce sources of frustration and thereby Profitec Go (on discount) was most sensible if I wasn't going to add it myself on a silvia or gaggia. W

First Setup, Loving it!
I am 4 months into Micra with Mignon Libra 65 AP. Since adding the new grinder in January it has made a huge difference especially not having to weigh beans every cup!

Top electric grinders on Reddit by positive & negative comments - for entry lvl espresso vs light roast espresso vs multiple brew methods etc. Based on 652 posts in the past year (Mar 2026)
I love my Mignon Libra. GBW is a game changer of you don‘t change your beans that often. I come from a Niche Zero, Not going back to single dosing.

Grinder upgrade
If you tend to use the same beans multiple days in a row the Mignon Libra is a great choice. GBW makes things easier by saving steps. However, if you switch beans often then you want a single dose grinder like a Mignon Oro.

Buying first machine
Okay, so one route you should consider, given that your budget is not unlimited, is getting either a Gaggia classic pro e24 or a Rancilio Silvia and installing a gaggimate on it. If you are comfortable with basic wiring (no soldering or crimping required, just unplugging and replugging) and a little

Single or Dual grinder setup
I find the third party ARO metal grind setting wheel fits the Mignons well to make it easy to switch settings consistently. Very precise. I'm 99% espresso (14), but I can get to French Press (80+/-) in seconds the rare time we need it. Retention is low, so I don't grind a waste shot going up in coar

WHY CANT EVERYONES TOP RATED GRINDERS HANDLE A NATURALLY OCCURRING SUBSTANCE ON COFFEE BEANS
One of the Eureka Mignons. If your budget can stand it, Libra is perfect for your wife with its grind-by-weight. Disclaimer: Although I used to own a Eureka Mignon Specialita, I never tried it with oily beans, so I can't say if it will handle those well or not.

Lelit MaraX is a good choice. For a GBW look at Eureka Mignon Libra or an All Ground Sense. Where in Aus are you located?
