Buying Advice: ThinkPad for AI / Cybersecurity Studies
If portability doesn’t matter and performance + quiet operation are the priority, the ThinkPad P16 Gen 2 or 3 is the best ThinkPad you can buy. It has HX-series CPUs, the strongest cooling in the lineup, supports very high RAM (ideal for AI and VMs), and sustains heavy loads far better than P1 or X1

Seriously? What has happened in your past?
ThinkPad P16 Gen 2, i9-13950HX w/ vPro, 192GB ECC RAM, 16TB NVMe in RAID0, RTX 5000 Ada, 4K OLED Touchscreen. Literally the highest end ThinkPad you can buy (as of 1.5y ago). Plus all the trimmings: WWAN card, NFC, Smart Card reader, 300W PSU, full custom vinyl wrap, carry sleeve, 2.5G network adapt

Easy answer, my ThinkPad P16 runs with windows 3h, on battery and with Linux it runs about 18h I can work with multiple Network settings easily switching from network to network, installing the WWan card was a pain but now it works better then my Smartphone. I can easily switch from development to p

do CS/AI students actually need powerful GPUs anymore, or is RTX 5090 overkill?
If you wanna do general software engineering macs are really good, good compile times, but lack cuda support which is the industry standard. On windows side any workstation laptop would be good like thinkpad p16 gen3 https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/lenovo-thinkpad-p16-gen-3?test_uuid=06f2t2mKxAWPbc1xm

MS Office finally achieved after hours of battling
I have to use Illustrator at work occasionally, so I set up WinBoat with a Win11 VM, and it works great! I even used some debloating tools to remove a bunch of the worst bullshit from the Windows VM. If it were up to me I would just buckle down and learn Inkscape, my work is pretty locked in on Illu

Need a rough & tough Windows laptop with strong specs, battery life, USB-C charging, and good thermals
Lenovo ThinkPad P16 gen3. It's expensive, yes and heavy; but it is one of the few laptops which is future proof (3 SSDs, 4 slots for DDR5 RAM, supports 128gb at full 4800 speed and 192gb at 4000 speed). If you are looking for upgradable processor and gpu, then only Framework is available.

Deciding Between Two Laptops For Mechanical Engineering
The Legion Slim will be the more robust option. I would avoid the Envy in general - build quality can be very hit or miss. With HP, their consumer lines (number series, pavilion, envy, spectre, Omnibook) are generally not great. Only HP's business lines (ProBook, EliteBook and Zbook) are quality mac
