What laptop to get for remote working lawyer?

I use a thinkpad x1 carbon with a touchscreen I bought at microcenter. I’m a former computer engineer turned patent litigator and I lean on it about as much as you could imagine. The GPU can run several 4K panels if I want. Chassis is also solid and the output ports are unlikely to flake out by the

ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 recurring hinge failure (3rd time in a year). Lenovo Support is claiming "Customer Induced Damage" (CID) despite an immaculate chassis.

Well that's a shame, I've just recommended an E16 G3 to a family member on the grounds of being more reliable than the consumer machines at this price. In my defence the only other things at the price point were the T16 G3 (was worried the performance wouldn't last) and the L16 G2 (was worried the p

What kind of laptop y'all using?

If I were at home most of the time, I’d get a cheaper laptop and a nicer desktop. Why pay for the portability and worse specs if you can afford to be attached to the wall? For on the go, I know tons of reporters do just fine with whatever cheapie laptop Walmart or Amazon has on sale at the time. Tha

Laptop Replacement Guideline

Which models? We've been using X1 Carbons for about 7 years (100 users) and can count on one hand how many times I've had to fix a laptop, and use the other hand to count how many times I've had to have Lenovo on-site support fix an issue.

Why do people generally buy Carbon X1 when they are so ridiculously expensive?

I bought my X1 Carbon Gen 10 in 2023 not because it's the fastest. I travel a lot usually backpacking for months at a time and weight is a very important consideration. It's also sturdy and well built. Good battery life on Linux. At the time my top contenders were X1 or Dell XPS 13. Having Linux ins

Upgrading from Intel MacBook Air (Windows + Cybersecurity + Vibecoding workflow) - i7 vs i9 vs Windows laptop?

If you don’t need Windows, get an Apple Silicon. If you need Windows, get a Windows laptop. As someone who loves the build of the MBP, I can really recommend a Dell XPS. Magnesium case and carbon inside (haven’t looked at them for a while now though, hope they didn’t change it). Or look at the Lenov

Dell Alternatives?

We use Lenovo X1 Carbons and have had an overall pretty good experience. Like any vendor the biggest failure points we see are the usb ports that people abuse. Internally we rarely see hardware failures.

Just installed Ubuntu on my T14 Gen 6, really can't get this smoothness on Windows...

I use Debian on my x1 carbon gen 10. I was using Debian 12 for the longest time. Updated to Debian 13 a month ago. It’s very reliable and stable. kde alone makes it a worthwhile upgrade over gnome with Ubuntu imo The only downside to Debian is that they don’t update things often, so it may not be th

Needing a Laptop, budget is $700 and I live in the U.S.

I would go to the pawn shops in the area and see what they have, I got some good deals that way, 2 Thinkpads E14 for less than 200 each (not in the us, but for this I am writing the prices in us dollars). A Lenovo LOQ with core i-5 and a 3050 for around 450. And several others that were good deals,
