No TV required if you get the H7 soundbar as it will act as the Dolby Atmos Flex Connect (DAFC) hub for the units you group with it (M5s or M7s). The soundbar has the α11 Processor which runs the DAFC. If you have a compatible LG TV then you can use e.g 1 to 4 M7s with the TV acting as the DAFC hub.

Just for clarification, you do not need the sound bar to use the speakers as standalone speakers. You do need Wi-Fi for the initial set up with the LG app. The system is very very flexible. I’ve only ever owned 2.1 speaker systems, so what excites me most about the LG Sound Suite is having true surround sound. I've never actually heard what it's like when sounds come from all around me. This would be my first true home theater layout. I also look forward to the Dolby Atmos FlexConnect
