What’s the best travel backpack you’ve actually used and loved?
For flying, like the Osprey Farpoint (or Fairview - which my wife has). Shoulder straps, load lifters, and hip belts make them comfortable to carry across an airport or around town, and they have a zippered cover that keeps the harness bits under wraps when / if you simply want to carry the bags by

Backpack for travel/carr on too
Check out Osprey farpoint/fairview 40L. It’s a travel backpack so it also has a clamshell opening that’s easy to get stuff in/out of like a suitcase. The backpack straps are actually really comfortable so you can walk with your pack fully loaded for longer distances, up stairs, etc. It’s very resili

How do you handle lots of weight on an achy back with a backpack?
This is all about overhead sized bags. Load transfer and under seat bags aren’t happening. Reduce the weight as much as possible! Get a pack with a load transferring harness that comes in various torso lengths or adjustable torso length for a proper fit. That will put 80% of the weight on your hips.

Cycling backpack 30L plus?
You could look at the Deuter Trans Alpine series, I have used a regular size for many years. The regular size is here also 28l, so similar to the Osprey Escapist. There is also a larger (taller) 32l version. But that is aimed at tall riders, so with long back, at least 1.85 m height. Considering tha

Traveling without a suitcase for the first time, any advice?
I travel with an osprey farpoint 55L. Fairview is the same thing but fits traditional female frames a little better. It is a two-backpack setup that will work as a carryon + personal item. It has a hip strap so you can fill it pretty tight with heavy stuff and not wreck your shoulders. Traveling lig

Anything better or similar to the Cotopaxi travel pack?
Only thing they have is cool colors. The fabric is really nice. Back panels are not ventilated so you will sweat a lot. Shoulder straps aren’t very good. They pack way too big for carry on unless you can figure out some kind of compression system. Straps aren’t fully stowable and there’s no adjustab

Backpack recommendation suited for hiking, and that I can use as my main luggage?
Osprey farpoint 40 if they still have it. The Farpoint 55 or 60 is sick as well, basically the same as the Farpoint 40 but includes a detachable 15/20L daypack. Converts into a duffel but also has all the straps and supports of a proper backpacking bag. Have used it for backcountry camping several t

One Bag with Kids??
If a lot of your daughter’s kit is spread among other bags then you can pull it off! But that means bigger bags than your mid-sized Allpa. Bigger bags are more comfortable with a waist belt to carry the load, and you can add a monkey bag for food… like the Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 55, which is a 40L

45L+ backpacking/traveling Backpack recommendations
Travel backpack carryon limitations are generally around 40 liters (21.5”x14”x9”). They are usually shorter and always wider than hiking backpacks. For instance a Mystery Ranch Coulee 30 liter hiking backpack is too long even in such a small liter size to carryon an airplane and would have to be che
