They work pretty well. I traded in my 2012 kindle fire towards a colorsoft earlier this year. I wasn’t using it often, mostly just for comics and graphic novels, since I had another ereader but it functioned normally (just shorter battery life).

I think that's the main takeaway. There is no perfect device. There'll be compromises on whichever device you choose. Try BestBuy! Managed to get a Colorsoft on 5.18.0.2 last week. I think 3rd party retailers probably have older firmware stock compared to Amazon.

The Colorsoft has very little flashing and I don't doubt that the same screen is used but Amazon implements something in their software and has something in the hardware different as well. It's definitely way way better than any Boox device.
