Can someone explain technically why Apple shared memory is so great that it beats many high end CPU and some low level GPUs in LLM use case?

Unified memory can, and in Apple's case, does mean you can use the same data in CPU and GPU code without having to move the data back and forth. Apple Silicon has a memory bandwidth of 68 GB/s on the M1 chip (non-Pro/Max), the slowest processor package for macOS-operated computers, e.g. the MacBook ...

University: "You need an M3 MacBook Air or newer to-" Nah

Guys, CHILL. As someone who has worked university IT, this is likely to ensure students who are buying a NEW laptop are getting one that is likely to be fully supported by the manufacturer for the full duration of 4-5 years of college. Those policies are also generally oriented around ensuring stude...

What’s the Best Mac App of 2024?

I bought a MacBook Pro M3 Pro in July (kinda bad timing but I’m fine with an M3 Pro). This was the first year I started playing with unique Mac apps for productivity and enhancing the MacOS experience. It’s been amazing so far… My favorites so far: Notchnook (love it, very useful. Needs to work some...

Why is the MacBook Air so damn good.

This post made me smile. I built myself a gaming pc a few years back for about £3500 and it’s superb, but I always wanted to have a laptop too for casual use when I wanted to be downstairs in the house and not ‘stuck on the pc’. I’ve previously owned basic windows laptops, the 13” M2 Air, the M3 14”...

Which one is best for editing videos and Lightroom edits on the go?

This is inane. This is a fundamentally flawed understanding of how these systems work. For pure photo-editing (Lightroom / Photoshop) on the built-in screen, the 14” MacBook Pro M5 is the stronger, more balanced choice out of the box. The Ryzen 9 / RTX 5070 Ti laptop can be faster in some heavy batc...

Someone else is sitting out macOS 26 and skipping it?

I allowed my work-issued M3 Pro MacBook Pro to update, and I updated my i9 MacBook Pro that I don’t really use, but my daily driver M4 Studio Pro is resolutely staying on Sequoia until my work machine stops looking like shit. I’m a Mac user since the System 6 days.

rustc performance: cores vs memory bandwidth?

Machine I just ordered which is way-overkill for running a single Rust build: 9985WX 256 GiB of RAM (8 x 64) 4 TiB "performance" SSD (whatever Dell means by that), I'll upgrade to a faster one later if I have to. 6000 Pro Max-Q (300W, no 600W available) Blackwell edition, 96 GiB VRAM My current work...

macOS Tahoe adoption rate

I did an upgrade back to Sequoia, yes it was an upgrade. Tahoe was the worst Apple experience ever in my life. I hate it so much, no words to describe. It is so fugly with rounded corners and liquid glass, fancy things i never asked for and never will need. They killed my launchpad and it is simply ...

Switch from python to swift

FWIW - I'm using an M3 Pro MacBook Pro, 18gb, and I **never** (yes, I'm knocking ALL the wood right now) have the problems people seem to experience as endemic in this latest stuff. ** shrug ** I also avoid CocoaPods and non-SPM dependencies like the plague when possible. I use exactly zero plug ins...

should i get this deal?

If the main goal is AI/ML, model training, or anything that relies heavily on GPU compute, then spending that much money on a machine without an NVIDIA GPU doesn’t make sense. With that kind of budget, I would go for a laptop with 32 GB RAM and a dedicated 16 GB NVIDIA GPU, then install Linux on it....
