I believe ASUS announced end of life for RT-AC68U but since you were able to rule out the modem and cable it may be time to consider a newer router but before that lets see if it is a WAN configuration issue. ASUS RT-AC68U weird crashes during Milano-Cortina
It's possible that it could be failing, the rt-ac68u is a fairly old model to be handling 30+ devices though.
