Does sound like an AP issue. The ASUS RT-AC68U has bad 2.4 Ghz support on openwrt. DD-wrt probably has the newest drivers for a broadcom based board.

What else is in front of the AC-68u? The ISP speeds you’re talking about (1,000 —> 1,200 Mbps) sound like DOCSIS cable speeds, so is there a cable modem (or ISP router in bridge mode) sitting in front?
