How much does subwoofer make up for average speakers
Audioengine A5+ speakers go down to 50hz by themselves, I have noticed they sound good the few times I had my sub woofer unconnected to them. Don't know what your level of cheap is but you might get the pair for somewhere in £350 range.

Do you still use PC speakers?
Yep; AudioEngine A5+ with an external sub. Came from the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 days. Speakers for lyfe.
