I've got ELAC connex dcb41 as they are perfect size for the space I have, they are quite good to be honest, the x bass setting also helps - i had some edifier ones before but these are better. They are good value though certainly, i wanted maybe some Rokits but they are too big for my desk...

There is a point to powered speakers in around your price point at £500. It gives good value for your money (vs passive systems). The elac debut connex dcb41 are worth a listen. You could pick them up off Amazon and return if you hate them. I listened to them at capital audio fest last year and was thoroughly impressed.
