Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition

Early in my career I made sure I had ethernet ran to every room, had a PIX firewall in my basement, had a torrent server running, etc. Now? I just use Google Nest Wifi connected directly to the ONT and spread a few extra mesh units around the house. No need to make anything complex.

How I Improved my Google Home Experience

For those not interested in a wall of text. TL;DR:After years of unreliable performance with smart home devices—including disconnecting speaker groups, Nest cameras dropping, and general network instability—you replaced your Nighthawk + extender setup with Nest WiFi Pro, only for it to get even wors

On sale at Costco

I have it. Speeds are great. Seamless roaming does not work as well as the Google Nest WiFi 5 system it replaces however.

Nest WiFi

The 6E will be more than enough to 500mbit broadband internet. I had Nest WiFi for years and loved it, it integrated well with my Google Home. When AT&T offered 2.5Gbit fiber, I could no longer use the Google product as a main router as it was limited to 1Gbit passthrough. I ended up on much more ex

How to add a point to Nest Wifi pro

Ask Gemini. It’s Google AI that walked me through adding another Nest point. Better instructions than you get in the Home app. I’ve got seamless WiFi through my house and backyard now.

ISP Upgrade now Nest Wifi Pro is unstable

I know what you're saying, and you're not wrong. This was kind of a financial decision. I ended up using a gift card I had to buy some 2.5Gig network stuff (so essentially free) and built out an OPNSense router to go in front of the Google Wifi. Now the Wifi is back to stable because it's only conne

Google wifi 6e

Are any of your 45 connected devices near one of your pods so that you might connect them by ethernet? I recommend sorting that out (and buying some cheap unmanaged switches if you need multiple devices to be fed by a single pod) and then re-testing your phone's download speed. If you can get everyt

Please god is there a better broadband option out there? Does it have to be Starlink?

I'll try to explain it as simply as possible 👍 The box virgin gave you does both your internet connection (modem) and your wireless connection (router) They bog down when you start loading devices onto your network (the amount of things you have connected to the internet in your house), you would be

Best home Internet connection in Newport

There are so many variable it's not that easy lol. But, it usually comes down to the router provided by Verizon just being crap. If you're not too technically inclined, the best option is to get a mesh wifi system like eero or google wifi mesh etc. It's likely a combination of the shitty router + ju

Better alternative routers

I just plugged my old Google/Nest WiFi mesh set up back in, it’s only WiFi 5 but it works fine and I didn’t have to do any set up.
