Is there really a big difference between passive and active speakers?
There can be made a good argument for either.Active speakers can be very convenient for bluetooth speakers, soundbars or smaller stereo setups (Klipsch the fives, Sevens for instance). If you are thinking of serious HiFi or Home theater: Personally I would always go for passive speakers. I want the

I’m tired of wearing a headset 24/7. Want to switch to external speakers. Are "Gaming Soundbars" actually good or just a gimmick?

New bookshelf speakers? $500-700 budget
I have a pair of open box Klipsch The Sevens that I got for around $700 off ebay and I would argue that it would be unrealistic to expect anything better than that for the price. Since you already have the amp I imagine you could get an even better pair of passive bookshelf Klipsch speakers like RP-
