Are t480 really this good?
It was a insanely great machine when it first came out. It's still serviceable. But it is very old for 2026. The prices people sell them for online are competing with much newer ThinkPads that have better processors (the one part you can't swap on the T480. So unless you find one for around 100$, it

I believe the Thinkpad T14 Gen 7 is a worthy successor to the T480.
It is, but it's also horrendously expensive. In EU stores Lenovo charges 360€ for upgrading the RAM from 16GB to 32GB. You can get a whole 32GB LPCAMM2 module for that price. My T480 is slowly dying and I really wanted to get the T14 Gen7, but I'm not paying 1500€ for a 16GB system with the most bas

The T480 was the best thing I've ever bought in my life. (no joke)
Is there a ThinkPad sub where T480 worship from brand new accounts is outright banned?

What sorcery is lenovo using to make the thinkpad this efficient?
If only they were always this competent. This must be a mistake on their part. I assume they fire their engineers if they accidentally make good products, which is how we no longer have the likes of the ThinkPad T480 or old Lenovo Legions that didn't randomly die.

GNOME 50 removes the X11 backend ... are we finally at the end of the Xorg era?
People are saying Nvidia + Wayland is a solved problem, but I still regularly experience crashes and performance issues on my ThinkPad t480 with an mx150 discrete GPU when using Wayland. I know it's old hardware and I should upgrade, but can't afford to with the current market. I'll be moving away f

I’m starting to resent my T480
As a student, you might as well come back to MacBook - brand-new Neo is 850 CAD with education discount, or you should be able to find older M chip Air models under 1000 CAD second hand. You get Microsoft Office IIRC, good battery life, good bright screen (some ThinkPads model configs still somewhat

thinkpads that are like t480
The idea that the t480 is the "last great ThinkPad" is bonkers The t490 was just as well built but thinner, the downside was only 1 sodimm slot and only the (much bigger) internal battery. They kept using pretty much the same parts between the t490, t14, and t14 Gen 2. If you really want both sodimm

t480 vs t14
T14 is newer and I'd go that direction if you can afford it. The T480 is on the inner edge of 9 years old and T490 is barely any better at the inner edge of 8 years old. (Although as mentioned they're arguably probably fine for office usage and light video work. my primary personal computer is a Lat

Why would you ever buy a T480 when you can buy a T14 Gen 2 or higher for cheaper?
I think it's down to influencer video content. There's loads of people out there claiming the T480 is legendarily good and even explicitly that it's outright better than successors. Almost all of the T480's actual benefits as a computer exist solely in 2017 and in people's memories. The batteries wi
