From Macbook Pro 2021 back to Linux: Recommendations?

You can run Asahi Linux on your M1. If you want something more flexible that will run whatever reasonable distro you want, look for a Thinkpad T, P, X1 or X13 (X9 is hit or miss on compatibility) that fits the budget. There are a lot on eBay because these are bought in large numbers by corporations

This MacBook, bought 10 years ago, has been working like new even today. 👀 Tell me which Windows laptop can last this long.

Gut instinct haha, could've been any de with stock gnome but I just smell fedora. I've been using fedora on my x13 gen 4 for a while now as well, and no way am I installing windows ever again lol. 3.5 watts reading pdf compared to windows 7 watts, with 0 advanced tweaks or "special" settings. Never

My first ever Thinkpad

I have a x13 gen 4 7540u, normal discharge rate (browser, pdf) is around 4-5 watts, and 2 watts on idle, ON LINUX. The same workload on windows is around 8 watts. Hence I suggest you give Linux a try, since I'm not sure whether your chip is just as optimised as mine.

Craving Linux, but fearing sunken cost to Apple hardware I have.

I don’t know what creative work you do but does Linux have the software you need? If yes, check out Thinkpad Yoga / 2-in-1 models. Not Lenovo Yoga but Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga - Thinkpad has better Linux compatibility. They come in X1 (14”, highest end), X13 (13”, high end) and T14 (workhorse).

P14s - kinda slowww

Tried a lot of stuff to debloat windows on my x13 gen 3 - 16GB ram and 1TB upgraded ssd, to no avail. Only had to use it for one course and then I headed back to pop_os! Which is snappy as ever

T440 and T540p usable for humanities student?

I think you'll be fine with a T440p or T540p for light use, if you put one of the quad core CPU's in it and run Mint or LMDE. If you want to tinker with it. Cost might not make sense though depending on what you can get them for. I've had a T440p since it was new in 2014, upgraded it over time with

Everybody Linux now?

My X13 Gen 2 runs windows 11 T470S runs Mac OS Tahoe X250 runs Ubuntu 24.04 Each laptop has different uses and has an operating system to suit. I will say Ubuntu transformed my X250. It was painfully slow on windows and it flies with Ubuntu, it feels snappier than the x13!

Looking for a laptop

I just bought a renewed 2020 ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 for $330 from Amazon. It's got a Ryzen 5 Pro CPU, 32GB of RAM and 512GB storage. It came with Windows 11, but I installed ChromeOS Flex right away. Very fast and stable, as far as I can tell.
