I just got these monitors but here are my observation so far: I have another setup consisting of B&W CDM9NTs, and a Minidsp Flex TRS. Comparing both, the B&Ws have a much wider soundstage but it's most likely the LYD 48s are too close too each other. The manual recommends setting them further apart.

This strongly depends on budget. If budget isn't restricted, the best I've heard, even the smaller ones, are from Genelec (stick to 5" or bigger if not using a sub). You will want to audition first hand, if possible. I did extensive work on 8040 and found that in the nearfield, the drivers sounded separate. I would also consider Dynaudio LYD 48, and I'm even seeing deals on BM15A, for the same price as 8040B.
