Time Machine solutions for near future

Synology NAS hardware works with Time Machine over the network. Buy a Synology case, drop a suitable drive or drives in it and after a few minutes of setup, you are ready. They even support cloning the data to cloud storage for automatic offsite backups - for an added fee of course. Most NAS support

Best way to keep local backup of iCloud storage?

I actually use 2 - I have a DS718+ and a DS920+. A little clarification from my comment might be needed. The Mac needs to be running to get backed up, but all the other cloud backups happen without any intervention from a computer. To set it up, a computer would be easier than a tablet, but it’s pro

Best way of storing backups with a single node?

I have a single PVE node, consisting of a 1 liter/usff Dell Micro box. One m.2 (120GB) for the host OS, one SSD (1TB) for the guest VMs and LXCs. Beyond that, data storage - including backups - is on my Synology DS920+ NAS, over gigabit ethernet. No, it's not the most high performing system out ther

New home server hardware advice

The ugreen nas option is pretty nice. It has the quicksync support so it will be good for plex transcoding since you have a plex pass. People are suggesting NAS + mini pc because it allows some room for growth. I started off with a Synolgy DS920+ and used it to run plex directly as well as other ser

Synology Nas , Nvidia Shield or minipc for Plex server?

Plex Media Server on a mini-PC. Storage on DAS or NAS. The Shield is a great client. It is a terrible server. You do not need a Plex Pass for hardware transcoding with a Shield. However, that advantage is more than offset by the issues. The prime problem is that the server is prone to simply disappe

Goodbye Synology, hello Unraid!

Cool looking build! I made the same journey recently and am very happy. I still have my 920+ for a few things and as a backup for critical files on the unraid. I now run all my main apps and file serving from unraid and it works flawlessly. I think it's easier in some areas than the Synology.

What's your setup?

I've got a Mac Mini that is the brains of my stack and currently storing everything on a Synology DS920+ with... 36 TB of storage (I had to check). It all lives on there. At some point this year I hope to replace the Synology with at least one Ubiquiti NAS. I only need it for storage at this point a

Synology NAS Experts, would you get a NAS just for storage purposes?

I run some containers on it. But even with having added additional memory however doing that much more with my ds920+ is likely not really going to fly, as running windows within VMM is rather slow and tedious. But still have to add some ssd to the mix, after having added additional memory, to impro

Advice on setup

I started the same way as you did about a decade ago.. ITX MB, small CPU, couple of disks.. But soon I've soon realised it's much simpler to buy readymade NAS. Anything exposed to the internet 24/7 I know I cannot protect as good as any decent company. If you give it some thought, they will save you
