New backpacker (after 23 years) stuck: Atmos AG 65 vs. Kakwa 55?

I used to rock an Atmos 65, and liked it a lot. It was very comfortable, even at high loads over 40 lbs. I hiked hundreds of miles in one last year. However, one big thing with those packs is the frame squeak. I went through 3 of them, and they all squeaked to varying degrees- which depending on you

New backpacker (after 23 years) stuck: Atmos AG 65 vs. Kakwa 55?

I have used Osprey packs in the past and currently use the Kakwa 55. My partner has an Eja. We just did a 6 day trip. In my experience, the Kakwa carried the weight (I think heaviest was up to ~18k / 40lbs) really well. I don't mind the risk of a sweaty back because, for me, the trade-offs in the tr

Back Sweat

I love my Kakwa 55. I've taken it on three trips now for a total of 11 nights weighing between 10 and 25lbs. My one complaint is that the only part of the bag that is wide enough for a BV500 is the roll top. Since my bear can is usually the heaviest part of my loadout it would be more ideal for it t

ultralight but with a cush backpack

Nailed it. I love my glorified dry sack of a backpack with super wide and cushy vest style shoulder straps. So much more comfortable than my original Osprey Atmos AG.

Looking for an ideal backpack

From all of my heart I recommend Osprey and Deuter backpacks. You won't get wrong with them, just choose the right model for you - every model has its own purpose. One thing to add from me - I think both brands have, let's say - ultralight and normal versions of the similar model. Ultralight models

Pack for fat guy

I've owned an Osprey Aether 60, an Atmos 65 and a Zpacks Arc Air Robic. The Aether was very comfortable but I utilized REI generous return policy at the end of the season to swap to the Atmos. Love the harness system, air Gap, and weight carrying ability of this pack and still have it for those reas

New backpacker (after 23 years) stuck: Atmos AG 65 vs. Kakwa 55?

Wait I am uniquely qualified as I own both of these exact packs and they are both amazing. I started backpacking with the Osprey and I continue to use it for Grand Canyon backpacking because of the durability, breathability and water weight I have to carry. I don’t go as many days in the canyon so t

Durston is absolutely unparalleled in customer support. If you search any Reddit thread or anywhere for that matter you’ll see nothing but raving reviews for their customer service. I’ve seen instances where Durston will overnight ship replacement gear to thruhikers at their next resupply point afte

Light backpack options?

I have been using an Osprey Atmos 65 but it weighs nearly 5 lb. I just bought another Osprey, a 58 L one, that is their effort toward being much lighter. I think it weighs around 2-2.5 lb. It seems to have decent waist belt and shoulder strap padding even though it's in the 2 lb range at that size.

Completed the Three Kings Traverse in the Tararuas – 3 days on an exposed ridgeline

Osprey Atmos AG 50. 50L was plenty for a 3-day traverse carrying food and a full camp setup. Super comfortable Anti-Grav frame under load and stable on the steep ridgeline climbs. Salomon XT-6, Ran these for the entire traverse. Good grip on steep sections and handled the mix of dense bush, mud, and
