A cursory comparison review of the Nikon Z9 and Sony A7M5 for bird photography

I’ve shot the Sony A1 and the Z9, both with 600mm f/4 native glass side by side. Both can miss focus when shooting birds in flight. Buy either system and learn it well and you wont be disappointed. Ignore the static on YouTube and forums, it’s all agenda driven. You don’t see professionals complaini

Mirrorless

The more significant difference is gonna be a stacked electronic shutter vs unstacked, where it can replace a mechanical shutter entirely. So that's your z8/z9, a1/a9, R3/R1. E-shutters like on the 850 and lower priced cameras will show distortions with fast moving objects like bats, golf clubs, pla

Worth Switching from Sony to Nikon Z for Wildlife? (Z8 + Adapted Older Primes vs PF Lenses?)

I shoot primarily birds/wildlife and I have used all of Sony's modern bodies a lot in the field. I do some instruction and I have a good relationship with my LCS so I end up spending a lot of time behind a wide variety of gear in real world scenarios. If you can afford the switch to Nikon, it is a n

Back to DSLR

I’ve just spent 2 years with a full Sony setup, A1, a9II and all G-MASTER glass. I’m going back to my D750 and D810. For me the whole mirrorless system felt artificial.

Mirrorless or DSLR? Newbie!

Mirrorless isn't a trend. It's the current standard. It's not going to go away unless a better form factor comes along. The DSLR is dead. Nobody's developing the platform anymore, and I'm fairly sure the very last brand new DSLR to hit the market was something like 5 years ago (by which time most of

Any pro photography bondhas here? Need a camera suggestion for a power user.

I am a sony a7iii user and let me break down brands and sony models. Each brand has its signature area. Sony is famous for fast autofocus and great ergonomics. Fujifilm for stylized colour science. Nikon for natural color science, canon for great skin color, lumix for video. Now coming to sony, sinc

Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know! April 10, 2026

Flying to Rome with my 18 year old daughter in less than a week and I'm struggling on a lens decision. Will be bringing my Sony a1 and 70-200/2.8 ii because I love that combo for portraits and plan to use it for a few landscapes too. I have the Sony 20-70/4 which I bought specifically to pair with t

Gear that was actually end game for you.

Agree. Sony a1. (although the mk ii has the few small improvements im missing on the original) And the sony 400mm 2.8. Its just such a beast! And reasonably light weight. With the a1 i basically have a 400mm-600mm f2.8-f4 zoom lens 😀 And still room to crop in post 🤯

Help me out with a setup please

Not sure why so many folks defer to mirrorless or DSLR for this application. I’ve created 100s of lacrosse recruiting videos over the last 10 years and I always shoot with a video cam … and I have a Sony A1 ii. My game camera is a Sony PXW Z200. You need remote zoom and at least 18X optical zoom. Yo
