Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition

Early in my career I made sure I had ethernet ran to every room, had a PIX firewall in my basement, had a torrent server running, etc. Now? I just use Google Nest Wifi connected directly to the ONT and spread a few extra mesh units around the house. No need to make anything complex.

I don't care how much it costs, what is the best wifi in 2025

It’s very unclear what your problem is. The most important question: If you’re hardwired to your Ethernet jack (where the internet in the house comes in), is the internet reliable? If no, investigate different providers. Sonic or MonkeyBrains are probably the best in SF, if they’re available to you.

Router/Extender Advice (KUB Fiber)

I have a TP/Link mesh system but they are now on the banned list. I'd recommend the Google Nest WiFi. You can get a three-pack for about $160. They have good instructions and support.

How to add a point to Nest Wifi pro

Ask Gemini. It’s Google AI that walked me through adding another Nest point. Better instructions than you get in the Home app. I’ve got seamless WiFi through my house and backyard now.

Please god is there a better broadband option out there? Does it have to be Starlink?

I'll try to explain it as simply as possible 👍 The box virgin gave you does both your internet connection (modem) and your wireless connection (router) They bog down when you start loading devices onto your network (the amount of things you have connected to the internet in your house), you would be

Adding Nest Wifi router to app, without active network connection?

Thanks, yes, this seems to have been the issue. Taking the nest to a working (already activated) network allowed it to be added. Remains to be seen whether taking it back to the new connection will allow navigating to the Spectrum activation page. This strikes me as a kind of wild limitation, becaus

Orbi AC3000 will be End Of Service within 45 Days

He is buying it for his parents. It's a cheap user friendly router. Google Nest wifi 6E was launched in 2022, and Google still supports the original older Google Wifi released in 2016, so there are many support years left for the 6E. It's half the cost used.

Easiest way to upgrade from 2016 Wi-Fi pucks with minimal configuration?

What is the current setup? Is it a 2 node mesh network, or more than 2 nodes? If it is just a 2 node network you could upgrade to a 3 node network and chain them so that the 3rd node gets a better signal by placing the 2nd node between the router and the ADU node. That being said, the 3 node google

Better alternative routers

I just plugged my old Google/Nest WiFi mesh set up back in, it’s only WiFi 5 but it works fine and I didn’t have to do any set up.

Nest WiFi

The only complaint I have in switching to Asus is that the mobile app to do device management isn't quite as clean, and I can't ask google home to do speed test 😄 Overall, the Nest WiFi was very set-it-and-forget it, which IMO is what an internet router should be.
