Would these be suitable to setup a very beginners NAS?

You can get a proper NAS for your money, an all in one package if you like. Look for UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus or simmilar.

No encryption?

It’s not encrypted, and it’s currently not possible to encrypt it only option you have is to use the vault app - it is on their roadmap but looks like its low priority as its been pushed back from last year it seems, the data should be safe otherwise unless someone has physical access to the machine

Ugreen photos

They can’t even give us a shortcut option. They have not fixed or added anything over the last 6months since I posted my review: https://www.reddit.com/r/UgreenNASync/s/3AinlejiIJ

Which OS for a “simple” and long-term homelab NAS on a UGREEN NASync DXP2800 (media + backups), after OpenMediaVault?

My thoughts exactly. I originally planned to install TrueNas on my Ugreen NAS before my purchase. However I decided to try out UgreenOS first. After a couple of days, I decided to keep it. It is simply very well designed and simply works. Also supports Docker so you can just about install any other

Kokią išorinę asmeninių duomenų saugyklą rekomenduotumėt?

Black friday paskutini pirkau UGREEN NAS, geras daiktas, jokiui nusiskundimu. Jei tikrai svarbus failai, naudok 3-2-1 taisykle. "3 total copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy stored off-site"

Google Docs Replacement?

You should definitely check out Nextcloud with the Nextcloud Office (Collabora Online) or OnlyOffice integration. It’s the closest thing to a full Google Docs replacement that allows live mobile editing without the annoying download/upload dance. It handles the syncing in the background so it feels

Ugreen says a native VPN tunnel app will be avaible

In the end I installed Easy Wireguard via docker, it's pretty easy and works flawless. Follow this guide and you'll have it running in a matter of minutes: https://www.reddit.com/r/UgreenNASync/comments/1i4iet5/how_i_set_up_secure_remote_access_to_my_nas_with/

Dh2300 does not support docker but....

Select the DH4300 Plus from the ugreen website, download the Docker app, load it onto your DH2300, and you're done. It works perfectly. https://nas.ugreen.com/pages/downloads

What’s the trade off?

I just bought a new NAS for home use for photo and file storage. I considered Synology as they have a more complete/mature platform. But I refused to buy with their HDD lock-in. And their technology seems dated. Instead I opted for a UGREEN DH4300+. So far (a week in) it works well. I’m just getting
